Bike4Art

The project [Bike4Art] is an urban infrastructure and sustainable mobility network composed of a bike-sharing and public-service functions. The project is located in the Province of Lodi, Italy. It fits within a broader plan aimed to develop aspects in the landscape, subsidiarity services, and networks of slow mobility in the area. It acts as an experimental model aimed at introducing a contemporary public service while saving energy, reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere while creating nodes of social interaction and participating in the revitalization of the natural and cultural heritage of the area. The work started since September 2011, and was opened for the public in May 2013. The importance of this project lies in the integrated design approach throughout the whole process. Our team worked in collaboration with 4 artists together with the esteemed Polytechnic University of Milan. Four simple structures were assembled and placed in different locations of the province. The idea was to use containers as basic structure, while the unit envelope is designed and inspired by the artists. Using containers allows the final products to become mobile, fast to construct, easy to dismantle and recycle or move to another location. Each unit includes a public toilet and eight bicycles, two of which are electric. The units are self-sufficient due to the use of photovoltaic panels on their roofs. The electricity generated is used to recharge the electric bicycles and to power the WC and the unit’s lighting system.
