Creating an integrated and comfortable school masterplan is key to ensuring the educational productivity of students and staff satisfaction. Ethos International School is an example of how energy efficiency concurrently creates pleasant spaces and a greater sense of community. The layout of the building units and open spaces are determined by a detailed climate analysis, which at the same time allowed to deter - mine the ideal glazing ratio and shading elements design and positioning. The final glazing ratio is additionally optimized to provide the indoor spaces with an adequate amount of cross ventilation to keep the students and staff cool during summer days. The simple strategies adopted reduce the need for air conditioning thus reducing emissions and cutting on operational cost of the school. In terms of energy supply, the effective area of photovoltaic panels was calculated in order to cover the electrical demand of the lighting and equipment on the premises. The panels are also used as shading elements elevated above roof level to ensure creating a pleasant and comfortable seating areas for people on the terrace. Outdoor comfort analysis for the crucial hours of the day (e.g. break time) allowed to pinpoint the critical locations that need to be treat - ed. Position and size of the courtyards and playgrounds were decided based on this analysis.
